Parent Resources

We know many families are new to rugby, and we want to make the experience simple and enjoyable for everyone. Below, you’ll find answers to common questions, what gear your child will need, important safety information, and ways parents can help out without being directly involved in coaching or team management.

FAQ for New Families

Is rugby safe for kids?
Yes. Youth rugby uses age-appropriate rules to keep the game safe. Younger age groups focus on non-contact or limited contact, and older players are taught proper tackling and safe play techniques by certified coaches. All matches are overseen by trained referees, and athletic trainers are present at home games.

Does my child need to have played rugby before?
No! Most of our players start as beginners. Rugby is easy to learn, and our practices are designed to teach the fundamentals step by step.

What are the time commitments?
Practices are typically twice per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), with games or tournaments on weekends during the season.

How much travel is involved?
Most games are local or within a few hours’ drive. Some tournaments may involve overnight stays, but we work to organize carpools and group lodging options to make travel easier.

Equipment List & Where to Buy Gear

Your child will need just a few items to get started:

  • Mouthguard (required for all ages)

  • Cleats (soccer or rugby cleats)

  • Practice shorts and socks (any athletic style is fine)

  • Optional protective gear – World Rugby-approved soft headgear or shoulder pads

Most gear can be purchased online through sites like Amazon, Rugby Imports, World Rugby Shop, or at local sporting goods stores (cleats and mouthguards).

Safety Information

Your child’s safety is our top priority.

  • All coaches are USA Rugby certified, including training in player welfare and concussion management.

  • Athletic trainers are present at games to handle any injuries.

  • Our club follows concussion protocols that include immediate removal from play, medical evaluation, and a structured return-to-play process if a head injury is suspected.

  • Players are taught safe contact techniques and how to properly tackle, ruck, and fall to minimize injury risk.

If your child has any medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, allergies, etc.), please make sure to share that information during registration so coaches and staff can be prepared.

Volunteer Opportunities

Parents can support the club in simple ways. Opportunities include:

  • Game Day Setup & Cleanup (help with field flags, pads, and tents before and after games)

  • Water & Snack Station (stock coolers and distribute drinks/snacks for players)

  • Fundraising Help (assist with raffles, spirit nights, or community events)

  • Event Assistance (help set up or break down tables and supplies for tournaments or socials)

  • Outreach Support (hand out flyers or help at club info tables during community events)

  • Photography & Video (take photos or short videos at games and practices for the club’s social media)

These roles make a big difference in keeping the club running smoothly — and they require only small time commitments.

If you’d like to get involved, let us know during registration or reach out to us at YCRCRhinos@gmail.com.
