Why “Falling in Love with the Process” Matters

At York County Youth Rugby Club, we take a different approach to youth sports. We’re not just building teams — we’re helping kids build themselves.

Too often, youth sports focus entirely on winning championships, reaching the “next level,” or securing opportunities for the future. While those goals can be exciting, they can also create pressure that leaves kids burned out, frustrated, or unsure of their place if things don’t go as planned. Even when they do succeed, some players are left wondering, “What now?”

That’s why we emphasize something bigger: falling in love with the process.

Every practice is a chance to get better. Every game is a new opportunity to learn. Every drill, every sprint, every moment of teamwork helps players develop not just as athletes, but as people. Rugby, with its emphasis on respect, discipline, and camaraderie, is the perfect sport for teaching these lessons. It rewards effort and heart as much as size and speed, meaning every player has a role, no matter their background or ability.

By focusing on growth, our players build resilience, confidence, and a love for the game that will last far beyond their youth seasons. Winning will come as a byproduct of hard work, but the real victory is seeing kids leave the field more confident, more disciplined, and more connected to their teammates and community.

Parents will notice it, too — the lessons their kids bring home about perseverance, teamwork, and problem-solving extend well beyond the rugby pitch. When our players “fall in love with the process,” they’re learning skills they’ll use for life.
